Sleeping Dogs
Sleeping Dogs is decent. The bit where it turns out you’re an undercover cop is a great twist. The story OK but nothing special. Gameplay consists of punching and kicking people mostly. There are a few guns, but they’re mostly given to you at the start of missions and at the start of most missions you drop your weapon which is annoying.
The punching people and kicking people is alright. There are different enemies for which one needs different tactics to beat. Like all games like this, it’s essentially a rhythm game with your cues enemy type and position relative to Chinaman as opposed to just buttons scrolling down a screen.
There are some bits where time slows down à la Max Payne or when you approach the speed of light but they’re only when you jump over some cover or fire from a vehicle as far as I remember. You can hold the aim button down while riding a bike in it and just ride about fully in slow motion which I enjoyed. You can do jumps from vehicles to others like on Just Cause which is also enjoyable for a few times and makes car chases interesting.
Chinaman gets cop points and gang points for completing missions and these unlock little perks and you can find jade statues which unlock special karate/kung-fu/China-boxing moves. You can replay missions to try to get a better score and unlock all the perks but none of the perks are that great. I suppose it’s wrong to say Chinaman gets cop points because you start off with them at each mission and lose them as you break laws during the mission. Even things like knocking a fence down or killing some people cause you to lose cop points. You’re free to kill people with the only repercussion being the police when you’re not on a mission, though. The police have very fast car and it seemed like they chased Chinaman for a few minutes and then they let you escape most of the time. That was just the feeling I got, though.
I didn’t notice the graphics looking that good or bad, which I suppose means they are average. It looks nice when there are lots of lights, though and the game has a nice atmosphere and would probably be a nice game to drive around in. You might not like it if you’re racist, though.
There are five girlfriends that Chinaman can have in the game, each of which you date once, have sex with, and then seemingly delete their number from your phone. Who wants that? Thought it sounds good, it just feels a bit shit like they’ve cut out content.
There’s a weird Siamese crowbar thing with two heads which must be a bug. In a karaoke minigame, it says I Fought The Law is by the Clash, even though it’s not originally by them and it’s certainly not played by them because it’s a karaoke version. The karaoke was alright. There are gambling ships that you need to boat out to sea to reach, but they’re not really worth it. There’s a bar in it called the k-bar, which sounded like gay bar when I first heard it.
Overall, I would rate the game £20. That is what I paid for it and it how much it’s worth. It was on Steams for £5.00 about a weak after I got it. Gutted.
